A statue in Mission de San Jose in San Antonio Texas, of the Archangel Michael, restored to its original garish brilliance :-D. I find it striking and beautiful and hope it may inspire others. The mission was founded in the late 1600's as one of the earliest in what eventually became the U.S. Many old churches suffer thefts of artifacts like this: a mission to the south in San Antonio had several items dating from the late 1600s/early 1700s stolen which are yet unrecoverd. Sadly a resale market exists and buyers may not know or care whether items of antiquity are stolen.
Below is a prayer to St. Michael for anyone interested. If not, thanks for looking and please continue browsing, have a good day!

Prayer to St. Michael, Archangel
O glorious prince St. Michael, chief and commander of the heavenly hosts, guardian of souls, vanquisher of rebel spirits, servant in the house of the Divine King and our admirable conductor, you who shine with excellence and superhuman virtue, deliver us from all evil who turn to you with confidence, and enable us by your gracious protection to serve God more and more faithfully every day.
This IS garish but cool! My daughter just did a report on Mission San Miguel Archangel in California. It is one of only 3 remaining fully functioning missions, and it is also the only one that has original, unretouched artwork. It was damaged badly in an earthquake in 2002, and one of the buildings that had a ton of original art in it is being repaired, but noone can go in yet. Inside of that are the original frescoes painted by local indians when the mission was built, and it also houses a hand-carved wooden statue of the Archangel Michael casting down Satan, but it has not been refurbished or retouched...it still has the original paint and gold gilding.
Sorry about the impromptu art/history lesson...I just think they are fascinating!

I want to die like my grandmother died- asleep and at peace...not screaming like the passengers in her car.

No problem My husband works near there...he brought me a photo of an abalone shell that's locked in a glass display case...it still contains the original dried up paint that the indians there used to paint the frescoes- it's about 300 years old! Also, I forgot to mention that the Arch. Michael statue is going to be at least 300 years old next year in '09!
Sorry again lol nice to meet you though! You must have a thing for angels (I know I do)

This is an amazing statue, very regal and complimenting Saint Michael's classic pose. His wings almost look iridescent in this photo, how awesome! Thanks for bringing this photo to my attention! I love art with the archangels, specifically Saint Michael! What a wonderful photo!
I may have gotten overzealous with the color saturation when scanning it in. I noticed the same problem with my North Rim Sunset picture. ;-} Thanks for the compliment!

There are a lot of themes that run through the stock gallery many people have similar ideas but they pull them off in different ways. In this series of newsletters we will look at similar ideas but different outcomes.
